The design concept of the Residential College takes inspiration from the architectural history of Islamic civilisation which focuses on the elements of Mashrabiya and Caravanserai architecture. Mashrabiya is the main feature of the architectural elements of the architecture of Islamic civilisation that gives the function of shading from the direct light and heat of the sun. This element also indirectly gives character to the facade of the building. Caravanserai is a stopover destination for travellers during the era of Islamic civilisation.
The concept of Caravanserai zoning and architectural layout is inspiring because it highlights the courtyard element in the central space of the building as a gathering place for various activities. This element is applied in the layout of residential colleges to provide a wider environment and more robust ventilation
